November 6, 2019 @ 5:00 am - 8:00 pm AST
2019 marks the fourth staging of CARICOM Energy Month 2019 which will be observed under the Regional theme “Empowering People, Building Resilience”. Since the passage of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria in 2017, there has been greater awareness of the reality of climate change and its threats on the existence of our Member States. Most recently in September 2019, Hurricane Dorian which devastated islands in the Bahamas has again underscored, the increasing frequency and intensity of hydro- meteorological systems that our Small Island Developing States will inevitably have to contend with.Greater resilience to climate change impacts is essential to our Member States to ensure energy security for their future energy needs. It is therefore important to understand the role of energy in climate mitigation as well as the need to harden energy systems for become more resilient to withstand future impacts.
At the Regional and National levels, all energy sector stakeholders have a role to play in addressing climate change issues and determining the actions required. Significant efforts have already made by key actors within energy, disaster management and emergency response. A critical part of these efforts is enhancing the information that is communicated to our citizens. In this regard, the specific objectives of CARICOM Energy Month 2019 are:
i. To highlight the opportunities that renewable energy can provide to residents and businesses;
ii. To increase the understanding of energy issues of the Region and the many solutions to achieve a transformation in the sustainable energy sector;
iii. To educate the public and other identified target groups on the opportunities and risks to the energy sector as it relates to climate resilience;
iv. To improve collaboration among Regional stakeholders to strengthen efforts to address energy and climate resilience issues.
CARICOM Energy Month 2019 will be Officially Launched at the Opening Ceremony of the Caribbean Marine Energy Technology Forum, Grenada.
