An Electric Mobility Workshop, ElMo Lab, will be hosted at the Barbados Hilton Hotel on 20-21 June 2018. Its organizers, the CARICOM Secretariat, has invited nearly one hundred representatives from governments, businesses, industry, academia, civil society and media to join ElMo Lab, and discuss future development and the establishment of sustainable schemes for “coupling of the electricity and transport sectors” within the region.
There is cognizance that challenges could arise if there is an unplanned increase in power demand due to electric vehicle charging. An expectation is that this will be coordinated with renewable power integration into the electric systems and there is need to coordinate the deployment of electric vehicle charging infrastructure with the modernization and expansion of the transmission and distribution systems in Member States. Consequently, over ten electric utilities will be represented at the ElMo Lab.
The ElMo Lab has been designed to address a multitude of factors, including technological developments and breakthroughs, policy support, deployment of charging infrastructure, production capacity, future customer needs for mobility and the requirements for acceptance of new technologies, and economic parameters such as vehicle production cost, as well as the cost of freight and duty, and energy prices. In particular, the event will deliver insight into key business and technical challenges that currently facing global OEMs and powertrain manufacturers, as well as the impact of the global challenges on regional EV and components suppliers and their respective supply chains. The ElMo Lab will also focus on identifying the technical and non-technical challenges, while framing the commercial opportunities, for electric mobility within CARICOM countries.
An output of the ElMo Lab is the “framework roadmap” for advancing and promoting electric mobility within CARICOM within this radically changing global industry. It is envisioned that outcomes from the ElMo Lab will be shared with expo participants.
