It has been 18 years since the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) commenced work on the Energy Policy that would coordinate the approaches needed for addressing our collective energy challenges. Coming out of this policy, CARICOM established the energy programme in 2008 that is managed by the CARICOM Secretariat Energy Unit.

The year 2013 saw our regional Energy Ministers finalizing the CARICOM Energy Policy to shift the region to sustainable energy by upscaling the use of renewable energy sources and promoting more energy efficiency.  We have made significant progress over the years in laying the foundation for reducing the dependency of our region on imported fossil fuels that remain subject to price volatility.

Even as we grapple with the crippling effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, CARICOM Secretariat’s Energy Unit continues to work assiduously with the GIZ and Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) of the Dominican Republic (DR) as our partners in the implementation of the Technical Assistance Programme for Sustainable Energy in the Caribbean (TAPSEC).

With financial support from the European Union (EU) and the German Corporation (BMZ), we continue to walk hand in hand with our regional institutions and stakeholders including state and non-state beneficiaries toward the implementation of our transformative collaborative programmes.

Among our successes during these unprecedented times, I am quite proud that we have successfully launched the CARICOM Energy Policy and Regulations Help Desk which allows us to provide robust technical assistance to governments, private sector, universities, civil society and other regional institutions in developing modern policies and regulations to ensure a smooth transition to a sustainable and climate-resilient future where we are fueled by renewable energy and use our energy efficiently.

But, of course, this newsletter is merely an open window to give you a glimpse of the collaborative efforts of the CARICOM Energy Unit, TAPSEC and our regional partners. Stay connected!
